Staying Active: Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Rollator
Share
Staying active is one of the best things we can do for our health as we get older — and a good rollator can be the thing that makes it possible. Whether it's a walk around the block, a trip to the shops, or catching up with friends at the park, the right rollator, set up correctly, makes moving around easier and safer.
Choosing the right rollator
Not all rollators are built for the same purpose. If you'll mostly be walking outdoors — on footpaths, grass, or gravel — look for a model with larger wheels, which roll more smoothly over uneven surfaces than smaller indoor-focused wheels. If it's mainly for getting around the house, a more compact rollator with smaller wheels will be easier to manoeuvre through doorways and tighter spaces.
Also think about what you'll actually use day to day: a built-in seat is great for resting on longer outings, and a storage bag or basket means you don't have to carry shopping or belongings separately.
Get the height right
This is one of the most important — and most commonly overlooked — setup steps. When standing upright with arms relaxed by your sides, the handles should sit roughly level with your wrists. If the rollator is too low, you'll end up hunched forward; too high, and you won't get proper support. Most rollators have adjustable handle height, so take the time to set it up properly (or ask us for help) before heading out.
Check the brakes before every outing
A quick brake check should become second nature — squeeze them to make sure they engage firmly, and check they lock properly when parked. This is especially important if you're using the rollator on any kind of slope.
Plan your route
When you're building confidence with a rollator, especially outdoors, it helps to plan routes with smooth, even paths where possible, and to be mindful of kerbs, gravel, or uneven grass. Over time, most users find their confidence grows and they naturally take on a wider range of terrain.
Make it a habit
The biggest benefit of a rollator isn't the device itself — it's what it enables. Regular walks, even short ones, support cardiovascular health, muscle strength, and mood. Try to build a short walk into your day, even just to the letterbox and back, and build up from there as confidence grows.
